Construction

-Hull  : Carvel shape, solid moulded FRP, with marine plywood bulkheads.

-Deck  :  FRP over end-grain balsa core.

-Coach House:  As above.

- Interior Finish:  Teak veneered plywood panelling with solid teak trim. Teak floor. Some painted marine ply panels. Deck head lining is perforated vinyl covered panels.

NOTE: Because the underside of the deck is fully lined, a full inspection of the deckhead was not possible except within some side lockers.

Extent of Survey:  The vessel was hauled out of the water for the purpose of routine maintenance. A full assessment of the hull, especially below the waterline, was conducted. All internal areas were assessed to the extent that it was possible without the removal of permanent interior hull linings etc. Under floor areas were assessed to the extent that removable floorboards made this possible. A test sailing was not conducted.  Auxiliary propulsion was inspected during the vessels return to the moorings.

General overall condition:

The vessel is showing her age but adequate maintenance has kept the vessel well preserved. The interior of the hull is lined with teak slating above the bunk line. Other areas behind lockers and under bunk storage are finished with the standard flowcoat finish. The areas where the hull is exposed are sound and solid, suggesting that the hull condition overall is good.

Interior timberwork is in good condition with some areas needing maintenance, varnish etc.

A visual inspection of the rigging and sails suggest they are in good condition and will see many years of good service on this type of cruising vessel.

Some minor problems were found and will be “NOTED” on an individual basis throughout the following report.

ENGINE BAY

Access to engine is via removable panels that form the companion way ladder to the cockpit.

Engine:

A 4 cyl. 37.5 Hp Beta Marine diesel is located under the cockpit.

The propeller shaft gland located deep in the compartment behind the engine showed a slight drip; one every few minutes. A little water was present in the bilge section forward of the engine.

NOTE: Teak decking is in need of refurbishment, with the seam sealant

showing signs of perishing. This is not critical to the vessels seaworthiness,

but timely attention will prevent further damage.

  - Genoa tracks and cars are in G/C.

  - Mast and halyard winches are in G/C and functioning well.

Running Rigging:

Wire parts are in good condition. Some rope halyard tails, sheets, braces etc. are showing signs of weathering. (This can be gauged by the fading of coloured strands in the rope)

COCKPIT:

General condition in this area is good.

There are 2 solar electric panels, one on each side of the cockpit rails. Panels and mountings are in G/C.

  - 3 winches by Arco are self-tailing. Winches and mountings are sound and functioning OK.

HULL:

Inspected on hardstand area:

  - Below the water line is generally in G/C.

NOTE: There were 2 blisters on the stbd side of the rudder. These were

patches of delamination. This is not unusual for a vessel of this age

NOTE: These defects have been repaired at the time these observations

were made. Normal repair practices were performed. The condition is

NOT critical to the structural integrity of the vessel.

Shaft Bearing:

It is in good condition with no noticeable wear.

Propellor:

The 3-bladed propellor itself is in G/C.

Rudder:

As this vessel is a “canoe stern” (double ended) the rudder is hung from the stern post to the heel of the keel, and is steered by tiller.

The rudder is solidly mounted and no appreciable movement in the gudgeon or pintle bearings was observed.

Attached to the stern sprit is a “Monitor” brand all S/Steel self-steering vane in E/C.

Inlets and Discharges:

All inlets and discharges were checked for soundness and valve function and found to be in G/C.

  - EPIRB, 406 GME Acusat: Expires Dec,2017

  - Parasail Sea Anchor.

CONCLUSIONS:

I have made the foregoing survey without unduly interfering with the vessel’s structure or internal fittings and consider that “CROSSWIND ” is sound and seaworthy. I observe that the vessel has been well maintained and she is structurally sound.  I would point out that there could be hidden defects it was not possible for me to find given that some areas of the vessel are hidden behind fixed panelling or linings.

I do consider that the minor problems encountered during this survey can be easily remedied during forward maintenance and would not hinder the immediate use of the vessel for recreational purposes. This survey has been completed fully and without bias, as I have no part in the ownership of this vessel now, or in the future.
